Casa4CASA Playhouse Tour

From June 27, 2009 to July 18, 2009 | See Website | 2009 CASA Playhouse will be on tour throughout Lawrence from June 27-July 18. Locations and details listed at www.dccasa.org. Donations ($1 per chance) are accepted during select hours at display venues and throughout the tour at the CASA office, on the CASA web site, and at the customer service counters of The Merc and the 6th Street HyVee. Proceeds benefit Douglas County CASA, helping abused and neglected children find safe, permanent homes.

City Band Concert Series

July 8, 2009 | William Kelly Bandstand in South Park | The Lawrence City Band, sponsored by LPRD with assistance from the Rice Foundation, will present this annual concert series conducted by Bob Foster.

Salute! 2009

From July 9, 2009 to July 11, 2009 | See description | Salute! - A Festival of Wine and Food is a three-day benefit that offers something for wine lovers of all levels and tastes. Every year, more than 600 people travel from near and far to attend the celebrated event. On Thursday, Salute! begins with the Mass Street Mosey. At the Mosey, attendees can stroll through designated downtown businesses sipping wine and sampling delicious local food. July 9th 5-8 pm. The fun continues Friday evening with a gourmet Winemaker Dinner. July 10th 6:30 pm, reservations required, 785-840-1604. The festival concludes Saturday with The Grand Tasting. More than 250 wines will be on hand as well as local gourmet food from some of the best restaurants and caterers in town. This year's Grand Tasting will again feature a Reserve Room; a select tasting that includes a choice of five specialty wines. July 11th 6:30 - 11 pm Holiday Inn, 200 McDonald.

Brown Bag Concerts

Downtown Lawrence Film Festival "State of the Union"

July 9, 2009 | 9th & New Hampshire St. | The third annual Downtown Lawrence Film Festival will once again feature classic film offerings that will be fun for the whole family. Join us under the stars with your blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy live music, free popcorn, prize drawings and classic films. The Festival will trace the history of the remarkable pairing of Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy beginning with their first film, Woman of the Year and ending with their last, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. July 9th—”State of the Union” starring Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy and Angela Lansbury, directed by Frank Capra, released 1948. Idealistic industrialist (Tracy) is drafted to run for the presidency but gets caught between the ambitious newspaper owner (Lansbury) who pulls the campaign strings and the integrity of his wife (Hepburn) who believes in the man behind the political façade.

Junkyard Jazz

July 9, 2009 | American Legion | Junkyard Jazz is part of Lawrence’s many traditions, playing traditional jazz of the 1930s and 40s since 1981, attracting musicians from Northeast Kansas. Musicians are always welcome to sit in on Thursdays.
