Baldwin City
Baldwin City is home to Baker University, Kansas' oldest four-year college. Baldwin's 60-plus historic sights include five listed on the National Register: Old Castle, Parmenter Hall, Case Hall, Santa Fe Depot and Dream Haven. New to the Baker University campus is the Clarice L. Osborne Memorial Chapel. The Gothic-revival chapel was originally constructed in Sproxton, England, in 1864. In 1995, the chapel was dismantled and reconstructed on the Baker University campus. The chapel is open to visitors Mon.-Fri., 6 a.m.-midnight, and Sat.-Sun., 6 a.m.-6 p.m.
Kansas' first railroad south of the Kansas River now provides scenic and historic train rides aboard Baldwin's Midland Railway. The train runs weekends and holidays throughout the summer. For information, call 800-651-0388.
A three-story native sandstone structure housing Old Castle Museum was built in 1857 as the first university building in Kansas. It now houses a collection of local history exhibits. Next to Old Castle is the Palmyra Post Office and Blood?s Grocery (1857-1862). These buildings served travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. Also adjacent to Old Castle is Kibbee Cabin, a reproduction of the log cabin in which a group of Methodist ministers formed Baker University.
