Lawrence, Kan. – Lawrence CVB Director, Judy Billings, will testify on behalf of the proposed Bleeding Kansas National Heritage Area to a Senate Subcommittee on Tuesday, March 15 in Washington D.C. The Energy and National Resources, National Parks Subcommittee will hear testimony from Billings and the National Park Service at 2:30p.m. regarding S. 175.

The legislation, currently in committee, would designate 24 counties in eastern Kansas as a federally recognized Heritage Area, based on the region’s history, which is integral to the nation’s history. The bill was initially introduced in March 2004 and was reintroduced in January 2005 by Senators Brownback and Roberts and Congressmen Ryun, Moore, Moran and Tiahrt. The hearing is the next step in the legislative process.

“I am pleased the Senate National Parks Subcommittee will be holding a hearing on the Bleeding Kansas National Heritage Area bill,” U.S. Senator Sam Brownback said. “This hearing will help elevate the legislation in Congress. It is vital not only for Kansans to know their proud history and contribution to this country but for the nation as a whole.”

A Suitability study, with pertinent information submitted by grassroots efforts throughout the area and compiled by Dale Nimz, local historic preservationist, was submitted to the National Park Service when the bills in house and senate were introduced in March of 2004.
